The Golf Athlete Training Program…
…the most complete fitness program for golfers who want to reach their potential.
Dear Golfer,
If you want to improve your potential to play golf at a higher level, you need to train like a golf athlete.
The best golfers in the world are now training like professional athletes from other sports. They train for…
- Improved strength
- Increased power
- Improved stamina
- Improved focus
The Golf Athlete Training Program is designed to improve your abilities in all of these areas so that you have greater potential as a golfer.
However, this program is only for the serious golf athlete.
If you are simply looking to improve your mobility a little bit, and only want to train with dumbbells and resistance bands, this program is not for you.
If you want to be a true golf athlete, continue reading.
Training and Practice…
…the two factor model of sports performance
Our approach to golf fitness is this…
We train to achieve certain physiological adaptations that are necessary to maximize our potential on the golf course.
Training involves training for strength, increased endurance, mobility, etc.
We then practice our golf skills on the golf course, driving range or practice green to improve our performance.
What we do NOT do is perform exercises that mimic the golf swing while we are in the gym, nor do we perform exercises that simply demonstrate athletic ability that we already possess.
What is the Golf Athlete Training Program
The Golf Athlete Training Program is a 12 month fitness program designed to substantially improve your strength, conditioning, mobility and mind so that you have greater potential as a golfer.
Note… this is not a “golf fitness” program involving “golf specific” exercises.
This is a program designed for people who want to be stronger, more fit, and more athletic.
Strength First
Most golfers are weak, and this becomes problematic as they get older. There are few golfers past the age of 75 that can still give it a good rip.
Yet, have a look at the long drive competitors. Both the men and women are big and strong athletes, and they are particularly strong from the waist down.
This trend has carried over to the professional tours… Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, etc are all strong ATHLETES.
Therefore, the first six months of the Golf Athlete Training Program are dedicated heavily to strength training with barbells.
With this in mind, you must have access to Olympic barbells and a squat rack. A power rack with lat pulldown and pull-up bar is ideal.
The second half of the program is dedicated to substantially improved conditioning, mobility and mental focus.
Each month of the program will touch on at least two of these categories.
The Benefits of the Golf Athlete Training Program
What are the benefits of the Golf Athlete Training Program?
- Increased strength = greater ability to produce force, one of the key components to generating more power
- Increased mobility = greater range of motion and the ability to generate more swing speed
- Improved conditioning = the ability to practice longer and finish your rounds strong
- Improved mental focus = faster improvements to your game and better ability to shoot lower scores playing with friends or in competition
Power = Force x Velocity
As we age, we lose body speed. That happens in every sport, which is why you don’t see many 40 year olds competing in the 100 meter dash in the Olympics or in swimming events.
However, we can offset some of that loss of body speed through increased strength. Increased strength provides you with greater ability to produce force.
Strength training also improves your overall mobility. The four main lifts incorporate natural human movement patterns.
Performing these patterns with a loaded barbell strengthens your muscles, tendons, and bones, all of which will help improve range of motion.
Combined with mobility training that involves stretching as well as focus on smaller muscles around the major joints, and you will notice improved range of motion.
Translation? A longer golf swing can produce a higher swing speed.
The importance of conditioning
The golf swing is taxing on the body. Fatigue often sets in near the end of a round, and during practice sessions.
This is when bad habits can creep into your golf swing, and your major swing flaws get exposed near the end of a round of golf.
Therefore, we need conditioning of our cardiovascular system to give us more stamina, and improved muscle endurance to overcome muscle fatigue.
The mental game
I’ve never been a huge proponent of focus on the mental game, but there are ways to help you stay more relaxed and focused during a round of golf and during your practice sessions.
Meditation and breath work help to improve your mental game.
The bottom line is you’ll be stronger physically and mentally, and this improves your golf potential!
